In the last few years, amongst all the countries of South East Asia, Singapore has made its special place in the world in terms of technological and engineering advancements. It has redefined many concepts, an example of which is the Marina Bay Floating Stadium which has perhaps not been tried by any other country so far. Also, called the Float@Marina Bay in a stylised manner, this venue acts as a multipurpose location for sports, concerts, parades, exhibitions, also cultural performances.

The Marina Bay Floating Stadium is situated on the Reservoir of the Marina Bay in Singapore and spans a length of 120 metres with a width of 83 metres. With this kind of statistics it is almost 5% bigger than the National stadium of Singapore.

The speciality of the Marina Bay Floating Stadium is that it has the strength to bear 1,070 tonnes of weight. This limitation can include within itself the body weight of 9,000 people, props for the stage worth 200 tones, and about three military vehicles weighing 30 tonnes each. It also comes with a seating arrangement for 30,000 people in the form of a gallery.

It is because of these reasons that the Marina Bay Floating Stadium has been assigned as the venue for all national events from 2007 to five following years. Even the National Day Parade has been decided to be held on this stadium as because the National Stadium at the Singapore Sports Hub located in Kallang, in under renovation for the Singapore Southeast Asian Games of 2015 and is expected to be completed by 2014.

The motivation for building the Marina Bay Floating Stadium came when the chairman of the National Day Parade committee decided of finalising an alternate venue for holding the National Day Parade during the 8 years within which the National Stadium was to remain under renovation. After taking in to consideration a number of other venues, it was zeroed upon the Marina Bay.

The main planning of the Marina Stadium was done by the Defence Science and Technology Agency of Singapore. The stadium was built in a manner where it could be relocated and also adjusted as per the nature of events taking place. Pontoons, pylons, and heavy duty rubber rollers went in to making the foundation so that the stadium remained steady in tides. Importance was also given in choosing the backdrop of the stadium and as the Marina centre looked pleasing aesthetically, it was chosen as the final one. A lot of thought has also gone in to the designing of the drainage, lighting, cabling of the stadium.

Among the various events which have got hosted on the Marina Bay Floating Stadium are the National Day Parade of 2007, the Aviva Ironman 70.3 Singapore triathlon of 2007, the countdown to the New Year’s Eve in 2007, 2010 Summer Youth Olympic Games, the entertainment event of 2012 which involved Kangta, BoA, TVXQ, Super Junior, Girls’ Generation, Shinee, f(x), and EXO as performers.
