The Eiffel Tower – Paris – France

There may be many places worth visiting throughout the world but, when asked to name some, the name of Eiffel Tower is one of the first to come to mind. Built in the year 1889 for the World Fair, it is the landmark of France and is known to be one of the most visited monuments across the world with about 7.1 million people already ascended it in 2011.

The engineer who designed and built the tower was by the name Gustave Eiffel and it is after him that the tallest structure of Paris is named. Its height is 324 metres and having crossed the height of the Washington Monument, it was also the tallest man made structure in the world for about 41 years till Chrysler Building of New York came up. However, now that the antennas have been added atop the Eiffel Tower, it has now again grown taller than the Chrysler Building.

The completion of Eiffel Tower took two years and all the 12,000 pieces of iron were shaped individually for the tower and then were brought together with the help of about 7 million nails. The material which has been used for the construction of the Eiffel Tower is wrought iron worth 7,300 tonnes. Such has been the design of the Eiffel Tower that the top of tower shifts from the side of sun due to thermal expansion and the tower can also withstand strong forces of wind. Gustave Eiffel ensured that after the creation of the tower, the names of all seventy two French engineers and scientists were engraved on the tower so as to commemorate their contribution in the creation of the world wonder.

The entire tower is divided in to three levels of which the observatory which is built on the third level is the highest platform accessible to the people in the entire Europe. The lifts which operate in the tower carry the passengers up to the second levels after which there are lift cars to take about 65 people in one go till a point in between the second and the third levels. With so many people visiting the Eiffel Tower, every day there are leisure options like restaurants too. The one which is located on the first floor is called Le 58 tour Eiffel and the other one on the second floor is by the name Le Jules Verne. The second of the two restaurants has a private lift to its access and is better known amongst the two.

It is not just France but Eiffel Tower is now more of a global monument and for that reason it gets featured in films, television shows, and even video games and magazines too. It is estimated that more than 200,000,000 people have already visited the monument so far making it the most visited paid structure of the world. The nearest Paris metro station to the Eiffel Tower is Bir-Hakeim and the nearest RER station is Pont de l’Alma.
